Block Description
The scars of generational trauma run deep, etched into the spirit like silent echoes of pain carried across time. Yet within those wounds lies the quiet strength to transform suffering into resilience. Through introspection and inner work, one learns to face the shadows, to break cycles that once seemed unbreakable, and to reshape the narrative with compassion and truth. In this transformation, healing takes root—not only within oneself but as a gift passed forward, offering the next generation freedom, strength, and the possibility of thriving without the weight of the past.
Dir. Sultan Ali Jr. / 4:15 minutes
A visual poem that tells the story of a young Black man overcoming his own toxic habits told through the narrative of a self-help cassette
Dir. Andrew James Costantino / 4:19 minutes
Islands is an eerie, raw, honest, and metaphoric animated short film, made to accompany the song “Islands” by Brooklyn musician Ski Team. From rising waters to spreading gooey textures, it’s a series of vignettes representing the Jersey Shore in its worst light—with record-setting rising sea levels and opioid death toll—but the profound beauty and peace that exists there nonetheless. The music video celebrates things that make us feel alive while reflecting on what happens when there’s too much of it.
Dir. Sonia Kennebeck & Tetiana Anderson / 15:30 minutes
Danielle Scott, a legally blind Black, Polish-Jewish, and Asian mixed-media artist at the cusp of international fame, risks her own wellbeing by exposing herself to the intergenerational trauma of the Atlantic Slave Trade. She traces her ancestors' lives for a greater purpose: creating art that exposes the wretched pain and intense beauty of the era, while guiding her audience through an experiential journey towards healing and hope.
Dir. Michael Rayshard Bennett / 47:22 minutes
Inspired by his grandfather’s wisdom and the call of his Kenyan heritage, Joseph transforms lives by guiding inner-city Black and Brown youth from Jersey City on a journey of self-discovery—bridging continents, building legacies, and creating a ripple of generational wealth and empowerment. It’s a powerful testament to the idea that understanding where you come from is the first step to reshaping where you’re going—and to the unyielding belief that legacy is the ultimate gift we leave behind.
